Shaping Ideas into Data Stories w/ Amber Thomas, The Pudding
Description: Coming up with ideas that can be turned into data-driven stories can be difficult. Learn where the folks at The Pudding get their story ideas and how they shape a rough idea into something that can be explored with data and visual storytelling.
BIO: Amber Thomas is a Sr. Journalist-Engineer at The Pudding. She spends time away from her keyboard exploring the outdoors around Seattle and hanging upside down in aerial silks.

data storyteller at storytelling with data w/ Alex Velez, storytelling with data
BIO: Alex has told many stories across the finance, insurance and pharmaceutical industries. She developed this skill both inside and outside of the office; and therefore, believes that everyone—regardless of their training—can benefit from effective communication. Her experience as a dance-fitness instructor and peer educator taught her the importance of crafting messages tailored for the audience. Once she began incorporating this important learning into her more technical roles—data engineering and analysis—she was surprised at the immediate positive reaction to her work. Now, she spends her time assisting others: by helping them tell THEIR data stories!

WEEKLY TOPICS
In addition to the free weekend workshops for all Data Stories Club members listed above, you have access to our collection of weekly guides. Each week you can further your exploration of data science and storytelling through hands-on activities, stories about data or stories with data, and customized Learner Guides.
Weeks 1 thru 5 help you explore and discover the basics of data and storytelling. Weeks 6 thru 9 refine and develop your understanding of 'data stories'. The weekly sessions series concludes with an opportunity to share your 'data story' with a panel of industry professionals.

Week 1: Find and Explore DatasetS
What kind of ‘datasets’ are available for analysis? What are the key elements within a dataset (types of data, features of a dataset, etc)? For the first week of your Data Stories Club students will explore a collection of ‘tidy’ datasets. At the end of this session students share the dataset they selected, as well as a few of the questions they want to explore.
Week 2: Get Literate! Reading and Unpacking a Data Story
Communicating with data, as Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic notes in ‘Storytelling with Data’, sits at the intersection of science and art. The second week of your Data Stories Club is all about gaining familiarity with the basics of storytelling with data. Students will be reading stories/articles containing data analyses, making observations, and posing some questions. The goal of this session is to begin thinking about some fundamental themes in a data story -- namely, the importance of context.
Week 3: Deeper Dive Into the Data
To Be Released on Sunday, November 8, 2020
Week 4: Let’s Get Visual
